DOZERS

The Heavy Equipment Unit consists of nine 3-person Dozer Teams. Nine Caterpillar D8 Dozers, Track Type, ICS Type I, four equipped with enclosed cabs, all have SCBA/SABA capability and are primarily used for wildland fire suppression. Each can be utilized in structural and/or dump overhauls where tonnage of material to overhaul is excessive and damage to paving/surface material is not a concern (i.e. recycling yard fires, lumberyards, pallet/tire storage fires, etc.) Six of the dozers are equipped with winches that have a 113,000 lbs./pl. rating. The fleet of fire fighting equipment consists of:

• 9 fire fighting bulldozers primarily used to fight wildland fires

• 1 track loader for structure fire attack and overhaul
• 1 rubber tire loader
• 2 motor graders

• 1 backhoe used to maintain motorways

The equipment is transported by nine heavy duty transports and nine heavy duty low bed trailers.

Twelve dozer tenders and miscellaneous support vehicles round out the fleet.

FRONT END LOADERS - TRACK TYPE

Two Front End Loaders – Track Type, ICS Type II & Type III, one is equipped with an enclosed cab, both have SCBA/SABA capability. Primarily utilized for bulk material handling. Machines are track type and are used in areas where damage to rubber tired equipment is a consideration. The Type II machine is generally preferred for structural overhaul due to size of machine (< 12 ft. height & < 8 ft in width) which facilitates easy access into most structures. Additionally, this machine has a bucket reach height of 15 ft. +/-. Both track loaders are equipped with street pads in order to minimize damage to flooring and/or pavement (i.e. interior commercial structure overhauls, paved storage yards, etc). Note: Often used in conjunction with dozers and/or rubber tired loaders dependent on incident specific requirements.

FRONT END LOADER - RUBBER TIRE

One Front End Loader – Rubber Tire, ICS Type II, equipped with an enclosed cab, SCBA/SABA capable. Primarily utilized for bulk material handling where tire damage is not a concern and damage to flooring and/or pavement is a concern (i.e. commercial carrier fires on freeways and/or overpasses, interior commercial structure overhaul, etc). Note: Often used in conjunction with dozers and/or track type loaders dependent on incident specific requirements.

RENTAL EQUIPMENT OPTION

On incidents where overhaul needs exceed capability of Department owned equipment and is anticipated long term (exceeds four operational periods) rental of specific heavy equipment is an option based on incident needs. Contact must be made with Financial Management Division (FMD) personnel requesting the specific piece of equipment to be rented as recommended by the Dozer Group Supervisor. The rented equipment is operated by HVEQ personnel and charged back to the incident. An example of this process took place on the Mulholland Inc’d (May 23, 2002) in which a tracked excavator was rented and utilized to overhaul an extensive over the side dump fire.
