FLEET SERVICES DIVISION

Engineering Mechanics

The Fleet Services Division was created in 1986 when the Department assumed full administrative, repair and maintenance responsibility for its emergency and support vehicle fleet. The Division was established to more efficiently and effectively manage the Department's fleet objectives and provide more flexibility and responsiveness to changes in emergency priorities and provide 24 hour emergency repair services 365 days per year. Fleet Services is comprised of 86 personnel in the Administrative, Field Repair and Fire Shops Sections. The Division's mission is to ensure a safe, highly functional fleet of emergency apparatus and support vehicles by providing well designed equipment and prompt, skillful fleet maintenance and repair services.

ADMINISTRATIVE SECTION

The Fleet Services Division Chief reports to the Deputy Chief of the Special Services Bureau. The Division Chief is responsible for providing technical and administrative supervision of inspections, preventative maintenance and repair of the Department's 1700 automotive and marine firefighting apparatus and support vehicles. The Division Chief chairs the Apparatus Committee and is responsible for the specifications, procurement, inspection, assignment and disposal of all automotive and marine firefighting apparatus and the preparation of the vehicle replacement, repair and maintenance budget. The Fleet Services Assistant Chiefs report to the Division Chief and are responsible for managing the operations and activities of the Field Repair and Fire Shop Sections and the Radio Installation and Sheet Metal Fabrication Units. Fleet Services managers also respond to major traffic collisions involving department vehicles and establish ground support for major emergency incidents.

FIELD REPAIR SECTION

The Field Repair Section is responsible for performing safety inspections and all light to medium duty routine or emergency repairs in the field. The mobile field repair mechanics primarily perform their duties in fire stations or at emergency incidents, thereby mitigating the need to remove vehicles from service for long periods of time due to maintenance and repairs. The Section employs at least one field mechanic on stand-by duty at all times for emergency repairs. This Section is supported by a mobile Sheet Metal and Fabrication Unit.

FIRE SHOP SECTION

The Fire Shop Sections are comprised of two shops. The Eastern Fire Shop is located near Department headquarters in East Los Angeles and the North County Shop is located at Fire Station 129 in the City of Lancaster. The Fire Shop Sections are responsible for major annual apparatus maintenance and inspections, heavy-duty repairs of all types, major vehicle retro-fits and refurbishing and new vehicle and emergency apparatus outfitting. The Fire Shop Section also employs one mechanic on stand-by duty at all times. The Radio Installation and Sheet Metal and Fabrication Units are also located in the Eastern Fire Shop.
