Heavy Equipment and Transportation


HEAVY EQUIPMENT:

The Heavy Equipment Unit’s primary function is wildland fire suppression through application of heavy fire fighting equipment. The unit is also utilized to mitigate storm, flood, earthquake and other emergency incidents requiring the use of heavy equipment. The Unit is often used for emergency ingress and egress that requires heavy fire fighting equipment to accomplish. The Unit also responds to structure fire and overhaul incidents.

The Unit’s non-emergency responsibilities consist of construction of new and maintenance of a network of existing fuel breaks and motorways throughout L.A. County and Catalina Island. The Heavy Equipment Unit also has maintenance and assistance by hire (ABH) contracts with Federal, State and Local agencies.

Additional non-fire fighting emergency responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Flood, storm, earthquake damage prevention and mitigation
  • Emergency ingress and egress requiring earth moving equipment
  • Fire overhaul (i.e. commercial structure, dumps, compost pile, tires, junkyards, lumber, etc)

Additional Non-emergency responsibilities:

  • Off set revenue generation through yearly maintenance contracts and/or Departmental Service
  • Orders (DSO) with; GFD, LFD, SCE, DPW & L.A. County Beaches & Harbors.


TRANSPORTATION:

The Transportation Unit provides transportation of heavy fire fighting equipment to emergency as well as routine incidents. Transportation personnel staff and operate numerous jet fuel vehicles and trailers used to refill Department helicopters and replenish fuel stored at strategic locations. The Transportation Unit also operates diesel fuel tenders and a heavy water tender (6,500 gal.) assigned to emergency and routine incidents.

Additionally, Transportation personnel staff and operate the following resources on both routine and emergency assignments:

  • Helitender 7 (HT7)
  • Fuel Tender 2 (FT2)
  • Heavy Water Tender 1 (HWT1), 6,500 gallons potable water
  • Logistical support of the Department’s USAR Cache
  • Air bottles to designated Battalion air caches
