The County of Los Angeles Firefighters Association has been involved in sponsoring many events for Los Angeles County firefighters. The Association created and sponsored the Los Angeles County Fire Department’s Overachiever Awards Program, hosted the annual “Burn Relay Finale” at the Fire Department’s Training Center, raised money for the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation and their special summer “Champ Camp” for children with burn injuries. The Association produced the national-level “East Meets West” training seminar (2001-2003), where firefighters from beyond the boundaries of Los Angeles County and California assembled to review the lessons learned from the most historically significant major emergency incidents in recent times, including the September 11th attacks.
The Association pursues firefighter safety by influencing state legislation and regulations affecting the fire service. For firefighters who choose to hold a membership in the California State Firefighters Association (CSFA), the Association coordinates delegates to represent Los Angeles County firefighters at CSFA’s annual conference. Delegates debate and vote on resolutions intended to benefit California firefighters. Once approved, the resolutions are forwarded to the California State Legislature. The Association’s current endeavors focus on training, safety and education by providing the resources necessary to support innovative ideas originating from its membership. Greater synergy between the Association, Local 1014 and Fire Chief P. Michael Freeman has facilitated consideration and implementation of its members’ more complex proposals.
