On July 23, the Los Angeles County Commission on Insurance (LACCI), in conjunction with Supervisor Don Knabe, held a Fire Preparedness Press Conference in Hacienda Heights. Knabe, LACCI members and Fire Department officials gathered to urge County residents to review their insurance coverage as fire season approaches.
The annual press conference rotates throughout the County and the five Supervisorial Districts. This year, it was Knabe's turn to host, and the Turnbull Canyon and Skyline Drive was selected due to its fire history. In 1989, this was the site of the Turnbull Fire that consumed 1,220 acres, destroyed 13 homes and caused over $4 million in damages. A short distance away is also the site where Fire Captain Glenn Rockey tragically lost his life in the 1955 Hacienda Fire.
Turnbull Canyon is located in a remote hillside area surrounded by natural habitat, creating a perfect setting for the press conference. Surrounded by County officials and fire personnel, East Region Deputy Chief Angel Montoya spoke on behalf of our Department. Montoya's message served as a reminder to residents about the importance of being prepared at all times for a wildfire in their neighborhood. |
