After eight hours of hammering, mixing and shoveling, the hard work of firefighters from Fire Station 147, city officials and about 150 community volunteers, a specially designed playground was built from start to finish in the City of Lynwood. The playground equipment was donated by Kaboom and Kool-Aid.
Firefighters from Fire Station 147 teamed up with volunteers by picking up shovels and beginning the hard work of shoveling sawdust and mixing cement. When I first arrived and saw the piles of materials, I just didn't think it could be done in one day. We had to build benches and tables from scratch! What at first seemed like hard work became a fun community event. At one point, City Manager Roger Hailey suffered an "injury" (a small hand blister) and asked for assistance from the Fire Department. I quickly pulled out the first aid kit to clean and bandage the blister on his hand. Mr. Hailey was please and thanked the Fire Department for saving his life!
This was a great experience for all, and the Lynwood community children have a new playground that was built with the assistance of their Los Angeles County Fire Department. |
