The County of Los Angeles Fire Department’s Forestry Division operates a unique forest nursery and conservation center in the San Gabriel Mountains called Henninger Flats. This nursery provides trees for environmental projects throughout the County. Free trees are also available to the public for conservation purposes from December through March. The visitor center provides a place for conservation education and was funded in large part by State license plate funds. In the visitor center, a scale model of the San Gabriel Mountains helps visitors to learn about the Eaton Canyon watershed, and provides them with the natural and social history of the Henninger Flats area. Visitors can also learn about mammals and their eating habits from the mammal skull displays, which contains the skulls of coyotes, squirrels, badgers and other mammals that are indigenous to the area. Visitors can also learn about the many other varieties of animals that live in the nearby mountains such as the bird species, and even rattlesnakes. The visitor’s center also has a huge pinecone display, which demonstrates how many of the huge trees in the area developed over time.
It is a three-mile hike to Henninger Flats from the entrance located at 2260 Pinecrest Drive, Altadena. For your safety, the entrance gate is open from sunrise to sunset. Private vehicles are not allowed to use the Mount Wilson Toll Road. Overnight parking is permissible on Crescent drive. A County of Los Angeles Fire Department Forester is on duty at Henninger Flats seven days a week including holidays. Our friendly staff will issue campfire permits, good only for Henninger Flats camp stoves. The County maintains Campgrounds, a forest tree nursery, a museum and an auditorium for the public’s use. Sanitary facilities, water and firewood are available to visitors free of charge. During extreme fire hazardous periods, the Mount Wilson Toll Road is closed to public entry. For information and reservations please call Henninger Flats at (626) 794-0675. We hope you enjoy your visit to Henninger Flats Conservation Center. |
