HAZARDOUS MATERIALS


Hazardous materials are any substances that, because of quantity, concentration, physical or chemical characteristics, pose a significant present or potential hazard to human health and safety or to the environment if released. Hazardous materials also include hazardous waste.

Hazardous materials that exhibit physical hazards include:

  • Blasting agents
  • Explosives
  • Combustibles and flammables (gases, liquids, and solids)
  • Compressed gases
  • Cryogenic fluids
  • Oxidizers
  • Pyrophoric substances
  • Reactive substances
  • Water-reactive substances


Common chemicals with physical hazards include:

  • Welding gases (e.g. oxygen, acetylene, argon)
  • Propane
  • Nitrogen
  • Gasoline
  • Paints
  • Solvents
  • Ammonia


Substances that cause acute and/or chronic health effects include:

  • Corrosives (acids and bases)
  • Carcinogens
  • Reproductive toxins
  • Irritants
  • Target organ toxins
  • Highly toxic materials (class A and B poisons)
  • Etiologic agents (disease causing microorganisms or toxins)
  • Radioactive materials


Common chemicals with health hazards include:

  • Gasoline
  • Oil (including waste oil)
  • Dry cleaning solvent
  • Antifreeze
  • Paints
  • Mineral spirits
  • Hydrochloric acid
  • Caustic soda

Hazardous materials, hazardous substances, and hazardous wastes are legally defined in California Health and Safety Code Chapter 6.95 Section 25501 (o-q).
