Hazardous materials are any substances that, because of quantity, concentration, physical or chemical characteristics, pose a significant present or potential hazard to human health and safety or to the environment if released. Hazardous materials also include hazardous waste.
Hazardous materials that exhibit physical hazards include:
- Blasting agents
- Explosives
- Combustibles and flammables (gases, liquids, and solids)
- Compressed gases
- Cryogenic fluids
- Oxidizers
- Pyrophoric substances
- Reactive substances
- Water-reactive substances
Common chemicals with physical hazards include:
- Welding gases (e.g. oxygen, acetylene, argon)
- Propane
- Nitrogen
- Gasoline
- Paints
- Solvents
- Ammonia
Substances that cause acute and/or chronic health effects include:
- Corrosives (acids and bases)
- Carcinogens
- Reproductive toxins
- Irritants
- Target organ toxins
- Highly toxic materials (class A and B poisons)
- Etiologic agents (disease causing microorganisms or toxins)
- Radioactive materials
Common chemicals with health hazards include:
- Gasoline
- Oil (including waste oil)
- Dry cleaning solvent
- Antifreeze
- Paints
- Mineral spirits
- Hydrochloric acid
- Caustic soda
