During the month of September, the County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD) observes Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month, to shed light on common risk factors and support services, as well as prioritizing employee mental and behavioral health.
Committed to health and well-being, the LACoFD place a high priority on safeguarding the physical and mental health of all team and community members.
This year’s theme, “NO JUDGEMENT, JUST HELP,” serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of compassion and assistance for those confronting mental-health challenges and other health disparities.
The LACoFD recognizes the unique challenges faced by first responders, acknowledging the demanding nature of their roles and the impact on their mental and physical health. National surveys suggest one in three firefighters has considered suicide and face difficulties to form close relationships.
The Department encourages all members to unite to foster a supportive and protective environment for each other and reach out for the confidential help available to all personnel. The ultimate goal is to ensure all members, both badge and professional staff, as well as their families are aware of the resources available before a crisis turns into a tragedy.
It is crucial to remember that seeking help is a sign of strength and resilience, and individuals in crisis can reach out to the 9-8-8 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, operating 24 hours – 7 days a week, for immediate support. In addition, the LACoFD Wellness Section provides a robust peer support team, behavioral health clinicians, and chaplains, available 24/7.
