On August 11, 2019, the Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD) Emergency Medical Services Bureau (EMSB) and Training Services Division won the National Association of EMS Physicians CPR video contest that challenged EMS professionals to help educate the public on sidewalk or (bystander) CPR. “We wanted the song and the video to be fun, current, educational, and catchy… and that there will be someone out there someday singing “Can’t Stop Compressing” to help them perform CPR,” said, Yun Son Kim, LACoFD Quality Improvement Coordinator and Lifeguard Division Nurse Educator.
The goal of the challenge was to illustrate CPR best practices using songs that feature 100 to 120 beats-per-minute (bpm). “We have a very serious job, especially when it comes to discussing topics such as cardiac arrest management. It was fun to bring a little levity to the topic while trying to educate our peers and the public about CPR,” added Nicole Steeneken LACoFD, EMSB Quality Improvement Director.
Songs that feature 100-120 bpm can better demonstrate the proper rate for chest compressions. To view the winning LACoFD video “Can’t Stop Compressing” click the image below.
