On Sunday, December 8, 2024, the County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD) announced the active-duty death of Fire Captain Michael H. Mercado at the age of 51. This devastating loss has been felt across the entire Department.
With over 25 years of service to the LACoFD, Captain Mercado’s last assignment was at Fire Station 90 in the City of South El Monte. He dedicated his life to protecting and serving residents and communities throughout Los Angeles County with care and integrity.
“The County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors, President Dave Gillotte of the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1014, and I extend our deepest condolences and sympathies to the Mercado family during this profoundly difficult time,” said Fire Chief Anthony C. Marrone.
The Department will always remember Captain Mercado’s legacy, bravery, as well as the lasting impact he had on those who had the pleasure of knowing and working with him.
To ensure the proper care and support of the family, colleagues, and friends of Fire Captain Mercado, the LACoFD chaplains, peer support team, behavioral health clinicians, and Memorial Management team have been activated.
