Access to Water Activities
and Readiness Education (A.W.A.R.E.) Program

The mission of the County of Los Angeles Fire Department Lifeguard Division A.W.A.R.E. Program is to inspire, mentor, and prepare youth by increasing awareness of lifeguarding as a pathway for personal growth, public service, and career development.

How Can Youth Participate?

Through structured aquatic exposure, education, and mentorship, A.W.A.R.E. provides inclusive opportunities, particularly for underserved communities, to safely access aquatic environments while supporting the County’s broader commitment to public safety, community resilience, and life-saving education.

Three Ways to Get Involved

A.W.A.R.E. Days introduce youth ages 9-17 to aquatic safety, swimming fundamentals, and County aquatic programs through structured activities led by certified lifeguards. These events emphasize safe access to water, exposure to aquatic environments, and awareness of education and career opportunities within public safety.

The Junior Lifeguard Prep program consists of six one-hour instructional sessions over three weeks, meeting twice per week. Participants ages 9-17 receive small group coaching with certified lifeguards focused on swim technique, endurance, and readiness skills required for the Junior Lifeguard entrance swim test. The sixth and final session includes the official entrance swim test administered on site by the Junior Lifeguard Cadre. While A.W.A.R.E. and Junior Lifeguards are separate programs, this component intentionally creates a pathway for participants who meet the required standards to enroll in Junior Lifeguards.

Beach Safety Days provide participants 9 years of age and older with a safe, supportive environment to engage with the ocean and coastal settings. Participants learn beach and aquatic safety concepts, build water confidence, and explore recreational and educational opportunities that expand access to aquatic sports and activities.

What do participants learn?

Across all A.W.A.R.E. program components, participants gain foundational knowledge and skills that support safe, confident participation in aquatic environments. Learning outcomes include:

· Increased understanding of aquatic safety and drowning prevention
· Improved swimming confidence and water awareness
· Exposure to safe ocean, beach, and aquatic practices
· Development of teamwork, responsibility, and confidence
· Awareness of educational and career pathways in aquatic safety
and public service

Instruction is delivered by LA County Ocean Lifeguards and is designed to meet participants at their current skill level, ensuring an inclusive and supportive learning experience for all.
