County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD) Fire Chief Anthony C. Marrone was joined by County of Los Angeles dignitaries, the Executive Team, the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1014, Department team members, and firefighters from throughout the Los Angeles region to honor the life of fallen Fire Captain Michael H. Mercado.

On Thursday, January 2, 2025, a flag ceremony was held at LACoFD Fire Station 90 in South El Monte, where Captain Mercado last served. The next day, a memorial service was held at Calvary Chapel Golden Springs in the City of Diamond Bar where family, friends, and co-workers gathered to celebrate the life of Captain Mercado. During the service Captain Mercado’s wife, Sian, was presented with an American flag from Chief Marrone.

“The impact of Michael’s absence has been felt far and wide as evidenced by the outpouring of love, support, and heartfelt condolences,” said Chief County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD) Fire Chief Anthony C. Marrone was joined by County of Los Angeles dignitaries, the Executive Team, the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1014, and Department team members to honor the life of fallen Fire Captain Michael H. Mercado.Marrone at the memorial service. “As we manage the grief caused by this loss – we draw strength in cherishing the many memories of Michael by reflecting on the countless lives he affected and the significant contributions he made which left quite a legacy.”

Captain Mercado unexpectedly passed away on Sunday, December 8, 2024, at the age of 51. He faithfully served the Department for over 26 years while embodying the LACoFD’s core values.

Known affectionately as “Big Cat,” Captain Mercado is survived by his wife, children, parents, and sibling, LACoFD Fire Captain Julian Mercado, Jr. He was more than a dedicated first responder, he was a community hero, mentor, and most importantly he was cherished as a husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and friend.

He will always be remembered by his LACoFD family and countless others who knew him.
