On Friday, June 14, 2024, the County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD) tragically lost a valuable team member during an emergency incident. Fire Fighter Andrew Pontious died in the line of duty while battling a large vehicle fire in the City of Palmdale, where he sustained fatal injuries.
Andrew dedicated over 19 years to the LACoFD, protecting the lives and property of residents and communities, including El Monte, Rosemead, the Kagel Canyon community, with his last assignment at Fire Station 93 in Palmdale.
As a veteran firefighter who was skilled and approachable, novice firefighters could always count on Andrew for guidance and mentorship. Fellow firefighters recounted when a new battalion chief arrived, Andrew immediately gave them a tour on their first day. Not to mention, he was also an amazing cook and often volunteered to be in the kitchen even when he was not working.
Andrew was a dedicated firefighter, he poured every ounce of caring into his work every day, without hesitation or regard for his own safety. He touched countless lives, and his passing is felt deeply by all who knew him, including his County and LACoFD family.
This fallen hero served with bravery, distinction and most importantly care. His legacy and memory will be forever remembered.
Born to parents, Gary, and Ellie Pontious, Andrew grew up in Claremont with his brother, retired LACoFD Fire Captain David Pontious. He was married to his loving wife Kim, and embraced his stepdaughter, Sara, as his own. Andrew loved his family; for whom he would go to the ends of the earth.
Known affectionately as “Uncle,” Andrew enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting, studying wildlife, and more. His passion for wildlife conservation was well-known amongst his colleagues and friends.
Andrew is survived by his wife, Kim; his stepdaughter, Sara; parents, Gary, and Ellie; brother, David; extended family; friends; and colleagues.
The LACoFD’s hearts are heavy as the Department mourns the loss of a courageous first responder and hero.
