The Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD) is spotlighting the Human Resources Division’s (HRD) Payroll Services Section for its integral role in daily Department operations.

Twenty-five staff members, who have dedicated over 20 years of service to LACoFD, process pay for 5,000 employees by performing a variety of complex tasks that require significant knowledge and research of both County and Fire policies and procedures as well as various special pay practices, including Labor Codes to ensure all employees are paid timely and accurately.

The Payroll Services Section smoothly handles the complex payroll, which is unique to LACoFD compared to other County departments, due to its pay structure, alternate work schedule, and various timekeeping systems.

“Our staff are dedicated multi-taskers, who pride themselves in their knowledge, skills and abilities,” said Payroll Services Manager Marissa Martin. “They value accuracy, teamwork, and learning new things as the County evolves with the ever-changing times.”

During the beginning of the pandemic, Payroll staff were considered essential workers. At that time, leave policies, timekeeping codes, and mandates were constantly changing; the team rose to the challenge to work together to continue daily in-person operations. Since March 2020, the section has worked to create a salary tool to calculate alternate overtime, transition the Lifeguard Division to electronic timesheets, and streamline reports.

Payroll Services is a multi-faceted section that continuously changes to meet the operational needs of the Department, HRD and its own section.
