County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD) personnel and families participated in two softball tournaments to stay active, join in friendly competition, and help fundraise for critical youth development programs.
LACoFD personnel participated in the WPP Coed Slow-Pitch Softball Tournament held on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at the Glendale Sports Complex in the City of Glendale.
Many more participated in another softball event the week after.
The annual Bear Classic Tournament charity event, which benefits the Department’s Explorer Program, took place on Friday, June 27, 2025, at the Sportsplex in the City of West Covina.
The Bear Classic, started in 2009 and originally held in La Mirada, has now grown to 26 teams of LACoFD personnel from various stations and battalions. Fire Captain Ruben Ortiz and Fire Fighter Ruben Ortiz II are among the primary organizers of the fundraising event, and helped facilitate this year’s extraordinary attendance.
Alexandra Ortiz, wife of Captain Ortiz, said the event has only continued to grow since its inception, and the tournament continues to be a huge success.
“It’s a charity event and all the families come out,” said Alexandra Ortiz.
This year’s Bear Classic softball tournament included food, music, entertainment, and various activities for personnel and family to enjoy throughout the day.
Congratulations to this year’s Bear Classic winner, Fire Station 16!
