On Friday, February 14, 2025, the County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD) announced the appointment of Brian R. Martin to Deputy Fire Chief of the Leadership and Professional Standards Bureau.
Chief Martin has dedicated 26 years to public service, beginning his firefighting career in Encinitas before joining the LACoFD in 2002. Over the years, he has demonstrated strong leadership, moving up through the ranks from firefighter to assistant fire chief. In December 2023, Chief Martin was assigned as acting deputy fire chief of the North Regional Operations Bureau prior to his assignment to the Leadership and Professional Standards Bureau in April of 2024.
Throughout his LACoFD career, Chief Martin has led several field battalions and played a key role in shaping the Professional Performance Section. Prior to his acting deputy fire chief role, Chief Martin oversaw the Air and Wildland Division, managing a fleet of 10 firefighting helicopters, nine wildland fire camps, and the Heavy Equipment Unit.
Chief Martin has served on the LACoFD’s Incident Management Team for over ten years and represents the Department as a member of the FIRECOPE Task Force and serves as the liaison to the Air Operations Specialist Group. Passionate about mentorship and training, he has also instructed the fire captain and battalion chief academies. Most recently, Chief Martin was appointed as the chair of the Los Angeles County Firefighters’ Memorial Committee, a role that reflects his deep commitment to honoring and supporting our fallen firefighters and their families.
In 2015, Chief Martin earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Fire Science from Kaplan University. He is also a State of California Certified Chief Officer, reinforcing his dedication to professional growth and excellence.
Outside of work, Chief Martin enjoys camping, backpacking, and spending time with his wife and daughters, affectionately known as the “core four.”
Please join us in congratulating Chief Martin on his well-deserved appointment.
