Defensible Space Referee Hearings 1024 682 Isidro Armenta

The Defensible Space Program is a joint effort between the County of Los Angeles Fire Department and the Los Angeles County Agricultural Commissioner/Weights & Measures. On Tuesday, January 13, 2026, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors passed the annual resolution allowing for the unified enforcement in declaring both improved and unimproved properties a public nuisance, and where necessary, requiring the clearance of hazardous vegetation. These measures create “Defensible Space” for effective fire protection of lives, property, and the environment.

As part of the resolution, the referee hearings have been scheduled throughout the month of February to allow owners to contest whether their property is in a fire hazard severity zone and should therefore receive an inspection. Owners may also discuss defensible space requirements. For additional information and the listing of upcoming referee hearings, please click here.
