Explorer Program

Introducing the youth of Los Angeles County to today’s fire and emergency medical services, emphasizing community service and civic involvement through positive mentoring, training, education, and career development.

After meeting the program’s entrance requirements, Explorers will be given an opportunity to participate
in a two-day Explorer orientation.

During the Explorer orientation, they will learn leadership techniques and soft skills as well as be trained on firefighting skills, hose lay evolutions, ladder techniques, salvage operations, proper use of firefighting tools and equipment, breathing apparatus use, and other related subjects.

We look forward to you joining our Explorer program and exploring all the possibilities!

Basic Requirements:
    • 15-20 years of age.*
    • Maintain a 2.0 grade point average in school.
    • Ability to read, write, and comprehend directions and training materials in English.
    • Ability to work as a team member.

2026 Explorer Program Open Enrollment

The LACoFD is pleased to announce the 2026 Explorer Program application is set to open on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. (PT). The link to the 2026 application will be posted here one week prior to the opening but will not be accessible until 10:00 a.m. (PT) on May 16, 2026. Applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis.

In advance of the application opening, the LACoFD is hosting two FREE Virtual Webinars (via Teams) for interested candidates to learn more about the Explorer Program, including program requirements, the time commitment, along with important information on the May 2026 application cycle.

We encourage everyone interested in applying for the LACoFD Explorer Program to join one of the two virtual webinars as noted below (no registration required):
