On Thursday, August 15, 2024, the County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD) was joined by several media outlets in a demonstration showcasing the use of 150 goats and sheep for effective vegetation management near Helispot 69 Bravo in Topanga.

In attendance were representatives from the Office of Third District Supervisor Lindsey Horvath, the Office of Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, along with other esteemed guests.

The LACoFD collaborated with Shepherdess Land and Livestock Co., LLC, with the primary focus of this media event to emphasize the significance of using prescribed herbivores, specifically goats and sheep, as an environmentally friendly method used in wildfire mitigation and management in and around the helispot.

This method, known for its eco-friendly nature, offers numerous advantages such as improved accessibility to challenging terrain, reduced noise disturbances, eliminating the need for harmful chemicals, and combating invasive species while clearing flammable vegetation.

“This facility has been maintained in the past via mechanical hand crews, but now the LACoFD is working to utilize more sustainable methods,” said Assistant Fire Chief Drew Smith.  “With proper land management practices, we can help mitigate the risk of wildfire while also preserving the environment and protecting life and property.”

The LACoFD extends its deepest appreciation to all the individuals, organizations, and community stakeholders who continually show their support and commitment to reduce wildfire risk.
