On Sunday, August 3, 2025, the County of Los Angeles Fire Department’s (LACoFD) Air and Wildland Division celebrated 55 years of service at Camp 9.

LACoFD personnel, retirees, families, and friends gathered to celebrate this milestone with a delicious meal, activities, and fun-filled program.

Beginning in 1970, the LACoFD established Camp 9 from former and abandoned military barracks.  LACoFD Fire Captain Wallie Reed, Camp 9’s first superintendent, was tasked with constructing a working fire crew camp from the abandoned military racks with a small budget.

Camp 9 was successfully opened on July 1, 1970. Following the opening, Captain Reed continued Camp 9’s legacy in developing the LACoFD’s first heli-attack program.

As part of the celebration, Captain Reed, along with assisting crew bosses, were honored and recognized for their contributions in constructing Camp 9, and more importantly, for building a foundation in managing fire line hand crews that continues to be utilized today.
