The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) honored Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD) Battalion Chief Roy Chapman, Fire Fighter Specialist Robert Brantley and Fire Fighter Russell Fagan at this year’s memorial ceremony in Colorado Springs, Colorado.  The event took place on Saturday, September 21, 2019.

The LACoFD team members’ names were among the 250 firefighters from the United States and Canada who were added this year to the International Association of Fire Fighters’ (IAFF) memorial wall.  The wall pays tribute to firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty and from job-related illnesses.

“It was truly an honor to be included in the 2019 memorial ceremony in Colorado Springs to pay tribute to my late father, Battalion Chief Roy Chapman,” said Battalion Chief Derrick Chapman.  “My family and I were overwhelmed by the love and support shown to us by Local 1014 leadership, Chief Deputy David R. Richardson, the Los Angeles County Fire Honor Guard and Los Angeles County Firefighters Pipes and Drums.  It is encouraging to know that even though it has been 14 years since his passing, his legacy lives on and he has not been forgotten.”

Members of the Los Angeles County Firefighters Pipes and Drums attended the memorial, performing alongside other band members from all over the country and abroad.

“This year, the band started a new tradition of flying a memorial ribbon for our fallen members in honorarium,” said Fire Captain Todd Emrick.  “The black and gold ribbon is attached to the bagpipes of a band member.  It is flown at each of the memorials and presented to the family at the end of the final memorial event.”
