The Los Angeles County Fire Department Lifeguard Division’s Junior Lifeguard Program graduated 69 cadets on Sunday, September 8, 2019, at the Dockweiler Youth Center in Playa Del Rey.  This advanced program is designed for youth (ages 16 to 17) and is geared towards participants who are interested in future career pathways with the Lifeguard Division.

During the summer session, Junior Lifeguard cadets were assigned to a beach within the 72-mile Los Angeles County coastline.  Cadets were also scheduled to attend weekly and trained in CPR, patient assessment, first aid and general Lifeguard operations.

To qualify for the program, cadets need to complete a 500-meter ocean swim in less than 13 minutes, a one-mile run in under 12 minutes, 40 sit-ups, 40 push-ups, a two-minute plank hold and a 50-question assessment.

Lifeguard cadets also attended “Tower Days” where they shadowed ocean lifeguards and assisted with rescues and special projects.  Junior Lifeguards who completed the program received a Certificate of Completion and an official Los Angeles County Junior Lifeguard patch.
