On Monday, February 6, 2023, the Los Angeles County Fire Department’s (LACoFD) Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) team, known internationally as USA-2, was deployed by the United States Agency on International Development’s (USAID) Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance (BHA) to assist with life-saving efforts in Turkey, following a series of destructive earthquakes impacting the country since February 5.

More than 80 members of USA-2 joined team members of its counterpart, USA-1, based out of Fairfax County, Virginia.  Together, USA-2 and USA-1 will work as part of the Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) and may be deployed for up to two weeks or longer.

In total, the DART is comprised of nearly 200 people, including disaster experts from USAID’s BHA as well as 159 search and rescue members and 12 canines.
