Over the weekend of July 24, 2026, the County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD) Lifeguard Division faced record beach crowds as millions sought relief from an intense regional heat wave.  Coinciding with a Southern Hemisphere swell, the extreme heat created highly hazardous coastal conditions, including elevated surf and powerful rip currents.

In response, LACoFD lifeguards successfully executed 1,500+ ocean rescues.  Additionally, lifeguards conducted:

  • 71,274 Preventative Actions
  • 749 Emergency Vehicle Responses
  • 517 Medical Aids

With a high surf advisory remaining in effect for south-facing beaches, beachgoers are strongly urged to exercise extreme caution.  Always check in with a lifeguard to ask about localized rip currents and ocean hazards before entering the water.

The LACoFD highly commends our Lifeguard Division personnel for their exceptional vigilance, teamwork, and dedication to keeping millions of local visitors safe.
