On Thursday, July 25, 2024, the County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD) received a sling donation from the Malibu Foundation to assist Battalion 5 firefighters with large animal rescues.

LACoFD Assistant Fire Chief Drew Smith, Battalion Chief Jeff Harms, and local firefighters were joined by the dignitaries below as Denise DeGarmo, Malibu Foundation representative, presented the donation in the City of Calabasas.

• Malibu City Councilmembers, Bruce Silverstein, and Steve Uhring

• County of Los Angeles Third District Supervisor Lindsey Horvath Field Deputy, Sophia Soudani

• Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin Field Deputy, Nancy Frawley

• Senator Ben Allen Field Deputy, Nick Faries

This generous donation comes to the Department following a horse rescue that took place in January 2023. LACoFD firefighters, assigned to Fire Stations 70, 71, and 99, created a makeshift sling out of hose to save a local horse named Jane.

Denise DeGarmo, Jane’s owner, collaborated with the Malibu Foundation and City of Malibu to make this grant-funded donation possible. Both Denise and Jane were on hand to present the sling to Chiefs Smith and Harms.

The LACoFD extends its heartfelt gratitude to the Malibu Foundation and City of Malibu for their generosity and friendship.
