In coordination with the United States Embassy, Mongolia, the nonprofit organization Spirit of America, and the Mongolian Society of Emergency Medicine (MSEM), County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD) Battalion Chief (BC) Sara Rathbun and Fire Fighter Paramedic (FFPM) Elizabeth DiRocco, along with Jessica Castillo from PRN Ambulance Company – through the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians – traveled to Mongolia from January 2, to January 9, 2024, to conduct a PreHospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) instructor course with physicians and first responders.

The training was held at the Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, and hosted by MSEM, the premiere emergency medicine organization in Mongolia.

Together they trained not only PHTLS providers, but also instructors to ensure the program will be self-sustainable in the future and the doctors in the city can bring the knowledge to the rural provinces.

This initiative establishes the first accredited pre-hospital care training program in Mongolia and greatly improves the quality of trauma care provided across the country.

The LACoFD is proud to be a part of NAEMT’s PHTLS program to further promote the program’s goal of excellence in trauma patient management by all providers involved in prehospital care.

Thank you, BC Rathbun, FFPM Dirocco, and Jessica for your commitment and dedication to enhance trauma care!
