Last week, on January 17, 2024, the County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD) observed the 30th Anniversary of the Northridge Earthquake.

Thirty years ago, on January 17, 1994, residents of Southern California experienced a devastating 6.7 magnitude earthquake that caused major destruction to highway infrastructure, a heavy disruption to public utilities, and widespread damage with significant impact to residences and businesses throughout the County of Los Angeles.

The Northridge Earthquake prompted the reevaluation of safety standards, extensive efforts to shape policies and practices, and improved earthquake preparedness public education resources.

The 30th anniversary of the Northridge Earthquake is an important reminder to residents to practice emergency preparedness in the event of an earthquake.
