As County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD) firefighters battled multiple wildfires, stories of their courageous efforts spread across media outlets, domestically and internationally.

On Wednesday, January 22, 2025, the LACoFD received 24 heartfelt letters full of kind words and support to the Department’s firefighters from a class at Siwanoy Elementary School in Pelham, New York.

The thoughtful idea to write letters came from Ms. Friedburg, a devoted teacher who wanted to help her students express their thanks after watching a news story about “People Who are Helping.” “The class was eager to do something to say, ‘THANK YOU’ to everyone helping in and near Los Angeles, especially firefighters,” explained Ms. Friedburg in her letter. “I hope these cards brighten your day, even if just for a moment.”

The letters, filled with vibrant drawings, were distributed and greatly appreciated at local LACoFD fire stations that have worked diligently to battle various wildfires since January 7, 2025.

On student wrote, “Dear Firefighter(s), it’s so hard to help other people when you might need help too. It’s really hard to be brave and everybody is grateful that you are. I believe in you!”

The firefighters were thrilled to receive the letters as they serve as a reminder that even through difficult times any gesture of kindness and compassion can produce strength and resilience.

The LACoFD sends its gratitude to Ms. Friedburg’s class for their thoughtful letters.
