On Friday, December 6, 2024, Los Angeles County Fourth District Supervisor Janice Hahn joined County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD) Fire Chief Anthony C. Marrone, Chief Deputy Jon O’Brien, Deputy Fire Chief William Mayfield Jr., and Assistant Fire Chief Derrick Chapman for a visit with the California Firefighter Joint Apprenticeship Committee (Cal-JAC) Paramedic Academy participants at the LACoFD Headquarters facility.
The LACoFD in partnership with the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 1014 (Local 1014), and Cal-JAC are hosting this 10-month Paramedic Academy held at the Department’s Headquarters facility in unincorporated East Los Angeles.
The class of 36 participants was greeted by Supervisor Hahn and Chief Marrone during a tour where they shared inspiring words of encouragement, support, and appreciation for their ongoing commitment to the program. Supervisor Hahn expressed the significance of the program to both, herself, and her father, the esteemed late Honorable Supervisor Kenneth Hahn, while Chief Marrone highlighted the positive impact the paramedic program made on his career.
The Cal-JAC Paramedic Academy is a pre-apprenticeship program designed to remove barriers to entry and provide a direct pathway into the fire service for qualifying candidates who demonstrate financial need.
Throughout the 10-month Paramedic Academy, participants are guided through a comprehensive curriculum that covers the fundamentals necessary in launching a career as a firefighter, along with the opportunity to earn their Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic certification, train for the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), receive preparatory instruction for the Cal-JAC written exam, and hone their interview skills through the guidance of a firefighter mentor. The LACoFD commends the Academy participants, and extends its gratitude to Cal-JAC, Local 1014, and all the dedicated partners who play a critical role in ensuring the success of this program.
