The Franklin Fire erupted on Monday, December 9, 2024, shortly before 11:00 p.m., near Malibu Canyon Road and Station Boundary in the City of Malibu.  Fueled by fierce Santa Ana winds, the wildfire quickly spread, prompting mandatory evacuations and road closures.  After scorching more than 4,037 acres, destroying 20 structures, and damaging 28 structures, the Franklin Fire was declared 100% contained at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.  There were no reported injuries or fatalities; the cause of the wildfire remains under investigation.

On Tuesday, December 10, 2024, Chair and Fifth District Supervisor Kathryn Barger signed an emergency proclamation for the Franklin Fire, enabling Los Angeles County to respond to the wildfire more effectively, accelerating the procurement of vital supplies, deployment of resources, and the ability to seek reimbursement and assistance from the State and federal government.  Following the emergency proclamation, Governor Gavin Newsom announced on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, that California had secured a Fire Management Assistant Grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to help ensure the availability of vital resources in response to the Franklin Fire.

The County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD) extends its heartfelt gratitude to our unified partners (CAL Fire and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department), responding Department personnel (along with those working behind the scenes), local and regional fire and law enforcement partners, Malibu Fire Brigade, and community partners for their courage and tireless dedication in battling this fast-moving wildfire from the air and on the ground.  Also, the LACoFD commends all the impacted residents for their commitment to working with first responders and community partners to safely evacuate.

As residents continue with recovery efforts, the LACoFD is thankful for the resilience of our first responders, the Malibu community, and many community partners.
