As we have seen over the past couple of months, this is already shaping up to be an exceptionally busy wildfire season. Known for their wildland fire suppression expertise, County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD) Fire Suppression Aids (FSAs) will be called upon, and their skills and training will be put to the test.
During wildfire incidents, LACoFD FSAs perform arduous work suppressing wildland fires by cutting line, clearing firebreaks, laying hose lines, and more. Outside of wildfire incidents, FSAs participate in fire prevention and vegetation management activities like controlled prescribed burns, and assist with other types of emergencies, such as filling and placing sandbags during rain events, performing equipment repair and maintenance.
When not providing support in the field, LACoFD FSAs work out of one of four paid camps across Los Angeles County: Camp 2 in La Cañada Flintridge, Camp 8 in Malibu, Camp 9 in Santa Clarita, and Camp 12 in Castaic.
The FSA role is an entry-level position specifically designed for those who aspire to become professional firefighters. By joining the FSA team, you will build a strong foundation in wildland firefighting, earn essential qualifications, and gain direct exposure to the operations of one of the premier fire departments in the nation.
