Over the Labor Day holiday weekend, County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD) lifeguards responded to:
- 457 water rescues
- 294 medical calls
- 3 boat rescues
- 41,365 preventive actions (assistance provided to the public to help avoid dangerous situations)
With warmer temperatures and tropical influences impacting the region, our lifeguards saw dangerous rip currents, high surf, and coastal flooding this past holiday weekend. These conditions also resulted in beach closures in some areas across Los Angeles County.
Summer conditions and weather remain with warm air and water temperatures expected to continue in the days ahead. The LACoFD would like to remind residents and visitors heading to the coast to always be aware of changing ocean conditions and to follow the safety tips below:
- Check in with a lifeguard for the latest conditions.
- Swim and surf in front of an open lifeguard tower.
- Know your limits and stay within your abilities.
As Labor Day weekend marks the close of our recurrent lifeguard summer schedules, the LACoFD would like to express our appreciation to our lifeguards for the long hours, constant readiness, and calm decision-making under pressure demonstrated by every member of our Lifeguard Division.
