On Saturday, October 5, 2024, the County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD), in collaboration with the Women’s Fire League, hosted 210 participants at the semi-annual Girls’ Fire Camp (GFC).
Held at the Cecil R. Gehr Memorial Combat Training Center at Department Headquarters in the unincorporated community of East Los Angeles, participants arrived bright and early eager to take part in this dynamic, one-day event.
Open to everyone 9 to 17 years of age, the day-long camp exposed participants to firefighting skills and techniques, an overview of the equipment and tools used in firefighting, and various LACoFD career pathways and community programs.
For the first time in GFC history, all participants were taught hands-only cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), a skill that can potentially save someone’s life. Hands-Only CPR focuses on the first few minutes following a cardiac arrest. Chest compressions move oxygen through the body to keep the brain and other vital organs alive, which will help buy time until first responders arrive.
LACoFD Fire Chief Anthony C. Marrone and Assistant Fire Chief Alvin Brewer were joined
by Assemblymember Mike Fong and County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors’ representatives to observe the participants show off their newly acquired skills.
The GFC concluded with everyone receiving a certificate of completion and a job well done from Chief Marrone!
