Canine Team Training 1024 681 Colton Lucas

On Thursday, March 19, 2026, County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD) canine teams conducted intensive training at the Del Valle Regional Training Center to sharpen their search and recovery capabilities. These exercises ensure operational readiness by meeting rigorous certification standards required for both handlers and canines every three years.

To maximize accuracy and reduce false positives, teams operate in pairs to cross-verify alerts. Their specialized roles include:

· Human Remains Detection (HRD): Trained to locate decomposition odors amidst ash, rubble, and debris once fire scenes are fully extinguished.

· Live Find: Deployed during active survivor searches to locate individuals trapped in collapsed structures or vehicles.

Certified teams must demonstrate expertise in high-pressure environments, including night operations, extreme temperatures, and complex search tactics, ensuring they remain elite assets for incident response.

Keep up the great work!
