On Monday, December 8, 2025, the County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD) and Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) hosted the annual Holiday Safety Press Conference held at the LACoFD Cecil Gehr Training Center in the unincorporated area of East Los Angeles.
With a focus on safety and the potential for hazards during the holiday and winter season, LACoFD Fire Chief Anthony C. Marrone and LAFD Fire Chief Jaime Moore encouraged residents to be cognizant of how to keep themselves, their families, and their communities safe.
“December is one of the most festive months of the year as we celebrate by putting up decorations along with sharing joy and making memories with our loved ones,” said Chief Marrone. “This also happens to be a busy time for fire dispatchers and firefighters as they receive numerous 9-1-1 calls for emergencies related to carbon monoxide alarms and poisoning, electrical fires, and fires caused by unattended candles or through the improper use of space heaters.”
Chief Marrone shared practical tips to reduce the risk of hazards, by keeping live Christmas trees well-watered, safe practices when using holiday decorations and electronics, and having a family escape plan in place in the event of a fire.
Chief Moore urged residents to make sure fire and carbon monoxide alarms are installed and routinely checked during the holiday season. He also shared important safety tips regarding usage of kitchen appliances, candles and space heaters, and the importance of Close Before You Doze.
Following the press conference, a pyrotechnic expert demonstrated the potential dangers a dry Christmas tree can cause, and how quickly it can ignite and spread.
The LACoFD reminds all residents to take the proper precautions to ensure they have a safe and joyous holiday season. For more information and additional holiday safety tips, please visit /seasonal-safety-tips/.
