It is with heavy hearts that the County of Los Angeles Fire Department announces the passing of our seventh Fire Chief, John W. Englund. Chief Englund passed away on October 8, 2026, at the age of 95.

Chief Englund’s legendary 33-year career with the Department began in 1955 following his service in the U.S. Air Force. Rising steadily through the ranks, he served as Fire Chief from 1984 to 1988.

His visionary leadership permanently shaped our modern infrastructure. Facing severe financial constraints, he successfully eliminated the Department’s debt, allowing LACoFD to rebuild seven fire stations and construct two new ones. He also funded a new 9-1-1 Communications Center and ordered the Department’s first Bell 412 helicopter.

Chief Englund was equally passionate about people. Beyond his efforts to strengthen Southern California’s mutual aid network through FIRESCOPE, he established the Family Support Group to care for the loved ones of fallen members.

Chief Englund’s legacy lives on in the stations he built, the families he supported, and the generations of firefighters he inspired.

He will never be forgotten.
