On Saturday, October 10, 2026, the County of Los Angeles Fire Department’s (LACoFD) urban search and rescue (USAR) team, known internationally as USA-02, was activated by the U.S. State Department to assist with the aftermath of the devastating 7.6 magnitude earthquake that hit Panama.
Comprised of six Fire Department personnel, three Department of Public Works structural specialists, and one Department of Health Services doctor, USA-02 partnered with the Fairfax County Fire Department (USA-01) to support local authorities in Panama.
During the deployment, USA-02 and USA-01 conducted over 383 critical structural safety assessments across seven provinces and 33 districts. Priority worksites included health centers, schools, medical facilities, government buildings, emergency services buildings, and churches. USA-02 and USA-01 provided vital data to Panamanian authorities to verify safety, guide repairs, and help essential services reopen.
As the mission concludes, the LACoFD remains deeply inspired by the strength and resilience of the Panamanian people. The LACoFD is grateful to have contributed to this vital U.S. State Department response.
Our thoughts remain with the people of Panama as long-term recovery and rebuilding efforts move forward.
