On Monday, August 10, 2026, Third District Supervisor Lindsey Horvath hosted a ceremony in Santa Monica to honor the County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD) Lifeguard Division for their service.
Though lifeguards serve the public year-round, one recent weekend exemplified the LACoFD Lifeguard Division’s dedication and commitment. Millions of visitors sought out local beaches to cool off from the heatwave on the final weekend of July. The surge in visitors coincided with rough ocean conditions creating powerful rip currents and shorebreaks. But LACoFD lifeguards were fully deployed and ready to put their life-saving training into action. In just those few days, lifeguards recorded over 1,950 ocean rescues.
“These numbers represent far more than data – they reflect countless individual acts of courage, skill, and teamwork,” said LACoFD Fire Chief Anthony C. Marrone during the ceremony. “It is an honor to stand before you today, alongside Supervisor Lindsey Horvath, to express our deepest gratitude and pride for the extraordinary work of our lifeguards over the past few weeks.”
The LACoFD celebrates every lifeguard’s selfless courage and service to Los Angeles County residents and visitors throughout the year.
