Sea Lion Release

Sea Lion Release

Sea Lion Release 1024 682 Isidro Armenta

On Wednesday, June 4, 2025, Fire Chief Anthony C. Marrone joined Los Angeles County Third District Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath, the Marine Mammal Care Center, the Department of Beaches and Harbors, and Lifeguard Division to release four sea lions into the waters at Venice Beach.

The sea lion release also marked the announcement of the end of the recent spike in domoic acid from the Pseudo-nitzschia algae bloom that was harming wildlife and their sources of food.

While peaks in algae blooms occur every four to seven years, this was the longest and most harmful algae bloom season to date.  County of Los Angeles Fire Department lifeguards were critical partners in the efforts to save as many injured marine wildlife as possible.  These four sea lions are only a representation of the hundreds of wildlife that have been rescued, rehabilitated, and released back into the wild.

We celebrate and thank the Marine Mammal Care Center, LACoFD lifeguards, and countless volunteers for lending their skills and care to rescue ocean wildlife.
