Today marks the solemn 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.
Twenty-five years ago, nearly 3,000 innocent lives were taken at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and on Flight 93. Among them were 343 firefighters and 71 law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice to save others.
Today, we pause to honor those we lost, stand in solidarity with their families, and remember the immense courage of the first responders who ran toward danger.
In remembering that dark day, we also recall the profound unity and resilience that carried our nation through it. May we always honor their memory through acts of service, kindness, and community.
County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD) Fire Chief Anthony C. Marrone, along with Chief Deputy Jon O’Brien and other LACoFD personnel, gathered in New York City today to honor the lives our fallen brothers and sisters at the 25th Anniversary Commemoration on Memorial Plaza at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum.
Across Los Angeles County, additional LACoFD firefighters and personnel will also be in attendance at multiple remembrance ceremonies to honor and pay tribute to the fallen.
As former President Barack Obama beautifully shared:
“Through even the smallest actions, we can reclaim the sense of unity that followed the attacks and demonstrate that our sense of common purpose is just as strong today as it was on 9/11. Americans can once again come together to mark this solemn anniversary with service and move towards a bright future as one nation.”
As we observe this solemn anniversary, let us renew our shared purpose, resolve, and compassion as Americans. May we forever honor the sacrifice of those we lost, express our gratitude for those who still run toward danger, and stand unwavering with the families left behind.
We must never forget.
