The County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD), in collaboration with the Women’s Fire League, hosted the first day of the 10th Annual Women’s Fire Prep Academy (WFPA) at the Cecil R. Gehr Memorial Combat Training Center in unincorporated East Los Angeles.
This year’s WFPA began on Saturday, February 28, 2026, with over 150 participants in attendance. After a series of rigorous endurance and stamina tests, 115 participants are continuing their training over the next five Saturdays.
The WFPA is designed to help participants build the strength, skills, and confidence needed for a career in firefighting. During the remainder of the training, the participants will continue learning essential firefighting skills, including extensions ladders, rotary saws, and pulling and laying down hose. The academy also teaches the importance of teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving in high-pressure scenarios.
Open to adults 18 years and older, the WFPA offers a unique opportunity for those considering a future in the fire service. At the end of the six-week training, participants walk away with a better understanding of the responsibilities of firefighting and what it takes to join this noble profession.
