On Friday, May 10, 2024, the County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD) Lifeguard Division held a formal graduation ceremony for 40 graduates of Ocean Lifeguard Academy (OLA) 41 on Dockweiler Beach in Playa del Rey.
Family and friends joined LACoFD Chief Deputy Jon O’Brien, Lifeguard Chief Fernando Boiteux, and the OLA training cadre, led by LG Section Captain Kenichi Haskett, to impart their final thoughts and acknowledgments to the graduating ocean lifeguards.
“Class 41, as ocean lifeguards you are not just guardians of the beaches. You are symbols of safety, hope, and courage for everyone who visit our beautiful beaches… Your dedication to grasping the skills necessary in one of nature’s most unpredictable environments is commendable,” said Chief O’Brien. “It is imperative that you remember the ocean is ever changing and each day presents a new test of your abilities.”
The newly hired Ocean Lifeguards will begin their official assignments, protecting over 72 miles of the Southern California coastline.
