Held on August 10 and 11, 2024, the County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD) Fire Explorer Program Committee hosted a two-day Orientation for over 120 new Explorers at the Cecil R. Gehr Fire Combat Training Center.
Explorers arrived early Saturday morning (Day One) excited to receive their personal protective equipment, hear introductory and welcome remarks from Deputy Fire Chief Robert Harris and Battalion Chiefs Todd Denerson and Kevin Price, before staring their evolutions to learn what it takes to be a LACoFD Explorer. Together in groups, new Explorers received hands-on training at various stations including hose lay evolutions, ladder techniques, ropes and knots, breathing apparatus, and fire hydrant connection techniques. Explorers continued their rigorous training to enhance their skills on Day Two.
In the presence of family and friends, the second day concluded with a ceremony to recognize and congratulate Explorers for having successfully completed the two-day orientation. Certificates of completion were presented to each Explorer by Emergency Operations Chief Deputy Jon O’Brien, Battalion Chief Todd Denerson, and Battalion Chief Kevin Price.
Thank you to the Explorer Committee, Learning for Life, the instructor cadre, logistics and administrative team, and veteran Explorers for ensuring a successful Orientation weekend.
New Explorers will officially begin their post meetings on Wednesday, September 4.
